Wei Zhou JIN  From China, ACIC student, 1993

The Dream
To study a Master of Computing and become a computer engineer

The Difficulties
When Wei Zhou came to ACIC at the end of 1993, he was over 30 years old with a three year Diploma and seven years of work experience in computing industries in China. He was confident about his ability and ambitious about his future career. However, he was not confident about his English, as he had never studied a formal English course.

He also doubted his chances of being accepted into a Masters course, as he did not have a Bachelor degree, which was the basic requirement for any Master of Computing-related courses at that time.

The Process
After several counselling sessions, we found Wei Zhou an academically strong student. His only problem was English proficiency. So our plan was:
1) to help him obtain direct entry into the Masters course, as based on his strong computer knowledge and experience he did not need to undertake a pathway program to improve his academic skills; and

2) to improve his English skills in a short period of time by arranging for him to study an intensive English course at the university that could offer him a place for the Masters degree, so that he could enter the Masters course upon successful completion of his English course without sitting for an IELTS test.

Late 1993 After comparing course details of different universities, we recommended the University of Wollongong to Wei Zhou for its excellence in computing and IT courses. We submitted the application with ACICs recommendation letter which convinced the university that Wei Zhou could handle the course without problems.

Early 1994 Received offer from the University of Wollongong, for Master of Engineering, Computer Engineering.

Apr 1994 Enrolled in 10 weeks English for Academic Purposes at the university

Jul 1994 Enrolled in the Master of Engineering, Computer Engineering.

Jul 1995 Graduated from the University, Master of Engineering, Computer Engineering

The Outcome
Wei Zhou is now a computing and IT expert. He applied and was granted permanent residency in Australia. Since his graduation, he has worked as a computer network engineer at banks, public hospitals and Telstra. He has also opened his own computer school and has investments in residential and commercial properties.

The comment from the student
ACIC has helped me make a good decision to study at the University of Wollongong, where I not only received my Masters degree, but also met my future wife. I appreciated and was very impressed by the professional advice and high quality of services ACIC has provided to me. I am very happy with my career and family life in Australia.
